[CE]2nd earthquake - aftershock - rattles Bay Area

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/10/21/BAJM1LKI5A.DTL&feed=rss.bayarea

An earthquake and an aftershock, both on the Hayward Fault near Berkeley, rattled the Bay Area on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The first quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0, struck at 2:41 p.m. The second, a 3.8, was at 8:16 p.m.

I felt both of them: One at school during fifth period, another one at home and I were sitting right in front of my computer. During the class, Mrs. Captipovic thought it was a truck, but her thoughts met with fierce opposition of the whole class. Everyone yelled “No it is definitely an earthquake!” Mrs. Lara later on proved that we were right. Although all of us knew that it was an earthquake, none of us hide under the table. This happened to me at the second quake too. I was on Facebook when it started to shake. It was a longer one. My dog walked in my room and hide behind my legs; unlike me, keeping the same pose from the beginning till the end. I must be the first one who dies during the earthquake. Facebook was spam by wall posts about earthquake again. Dongho’s wall post was hilarious. He wrote “I hate this country! I am going back to Korea.” Forty people liked it.

It may be a good thing that small earthquakes happen. It releases the energy so that the big one will not happen. I hope it is not a sign of the end of the world because I spend most of my life in school and have not got a chance to enjoy my life yet.

[RE]Homecoming!

I decided to talk about the homecoming after I read Priscilla’s post.

It was soooo much fundressing up all in red because I am a SENIOR! I wore my senior shirt and sprayed my hair with red hair spray. I also have a red ribbon around my head. I used red face paint to make a line on each cheek. I also wore white shorts and red soccer socks.

Dressing up for homecoming is fun. I bought face paint and hair spray at Halloween City with my friends the day before homecoming. [A person who wore black one-piece tights scared the hell out of me made it even more interesting (in my friends’ view. It made their day.)]

It was great to see the whole classroom is full of red. People were all excited about the homecoming assembly and homecoming game. We were helping each others to put the face print on. It took quite a while for us to settle down and finally started the class like fifteen minutes after the bell.

The homecoming assembly somehow disappointed me. The juniors seemed more passionate than us. The cheerleader did not perform (well they led us to sing the hornet song, that’s all). Although I heard that it was because one of the cheerleaders got hurt right before the assembly, and I felt sorry for that. Last year, the Football team at least danced; they did not have any special performance this year. That caused the assembly pretty short. After the assembly I took picture with Buzzy and Courtney. I had always been dreaming be in a picture with Buzzy, and I finally completed my dream. (By the way, I love Courtney’s Indian headdress so much. That’s so cool!)

It was still a fun day. I took many pictures with friends.

[Free]Was I cheated?

It is so hard to be a nice person.

Today, after school, I walked on Park Street and about to wait for my aunt to pick me up, an anxious woman walk to me and ask me for help. She said she lived in Sacramento and she needed enough gas fees to back home. I was about to say no because there are many swindlers in today’s society. But her tears dropped down and kept murmuring something like “I told him not to drink but he won’t listen.” My heart melted with pity, I could not see a person cry. I would promise most of the things a crying person asks, seriously. So, I gave her five bucks. She thanked me and left. Then she asked someone else but that person just walked away.

I was sort of regret after I gave her that five bucks. I am broke, that was the only cash in my wallet. I wished I had three one dollar bills but I did not. And I started to worry that I was cheated. I told this story to my aunt as soon as I got in her car; she said I must be deceived. Asking for gas fee is a common trick of swindlers. One of my friends told me a similar situation she was in. A guy asked her for money to pay his gas in order to drive back to Los Angels. She also gave him five dollars. She thought she has done a right thing until she saw the same guy asked people again several days later.

No evidence showed that the woman in my case was lying, but there are some weird feelings keep bothering me. I do not really know what I should do next time. What if it is real? Imaging ourselves in a completely strange place and with no money, an empty gasoline car, and no one wills to help us. Wouldn’t the world we lived in become a cruel world? I should blame this on those swindlers, they made people get confused and become cold-hearted.

[ME]Going for the Look

There are many different ways to promote clothes, such as hiring models to wear them in order to capture customers’ eye ball. Although the outlook of sales clerks is not as important as the models, the retailers still chose the sales clerks base on the outlook because they see those clerks as “a walking billboard,” mentioned by Marshal Cohen, a senior industry analyst with the NPD Group. I agree with Cohen’s analysis since those “walking billboard” got my attention indeed.

As a teenage girl, I admit that I loved the giant poster with pretty models that hangs all over the shop, and that always capture my attention. A cloth will look better on a person with beautiful outlook than the others. Although the cloth may not fit me, at least I want to go inside of the store and try it and other clothes. If the product doesn’t look good on the model, I won’t even waste my time to walk in the store. The environment in the store would become one of the factors that influence me to buy the cloth or not. It feels good when I walk into any upscale boutique and see salespeople who look like they walked off the fashion pages. For guys, attractive women could really be a reason for them to purchase. Some of my male friends will enter a shop only because it has hot girls as sales clerks. They love to hang out in a store that has many young and beautiful girls. That gains the opportunity for them to find some clothes that fit and buy them. Therefore, those retailers are smart and have the power to hire the people they think could represent their brands.

There is an example provide in the article “Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination” written by Steven Greenhouse. A high school senior from Orland Park, a Chicago suburb, named Matthew Sheehey said, “If you see an attractive person working in the store wearing Abercrombie clothes, it makes you want to wear it, too.” We can view him as a representative of normal American teenager. Teenager is one of the major markets of stores like Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, and Forever 21. Teenagers love to follow the latest fad and wish to become as hot as the stars or the models. Advertisement plays a big role in teenager’s mind. Teenagers would buy fashion magazines and keep updating themselves. At this time, the poster would come into their mine and build up the image of the store. If the model is not attractive enough, the will to shop at this store will be overtaken by others. Some of the teenagers may not built up their own closing style yet; when they see the attractive people working in the store wearing even the normal clothes, they may just imitating those salespeople because they want to be as attractive as those sales clerks.

Some people consider hiring attractive people rather than others as discrimination. That's not racism, that's capitalism. Larry Elder, a talk show host said, “this is about a business deciding pursuant to its own best interests, rightly or wrongly, that a particular kind of salesperson is more likely to generate more dollars … It's all about the bottom line.” Business is as fierce as a war. For sure the employers try to make as much profit as possible. Every retailer wants to show customers their best image; therefore they would find the good looking person to perform their products. Or else they would lose at the beginning. Also, normal looking and people from other race do get hired by the retailer, but just doing a different job. Cal State student Carla Grubb says she was increasingly uncomfortable in the Abercrombie store she worked in: “When I did get scheduled, I would have to come in at closing time and wash the front windows and vacuum and wipe off mannequins. While I was washing windows and vacuuming and dusting, my coworkers, my white coworkers, were folding the clothes, which I wanted to do, selling the clothes, which I wanted to do.” It is not that Abercrombie does not hire other race people; they provide different jobs for them. A store needs to have people for different position to keep it work regularly. Furthermore, under both California and federal law, it is legal to consider physical appearance when making employment decisions. There is not thing wrong when retailers seek out workers whose look they feel will sell clothes.

In conclusion, Marshal Cohen’s analysis is correct, and it is totally understandable that retailers only hire the most suitable people for their products. In today’s competitive society, the retailers need to be stand out enough in order to capture the consumers’ attention. Hiring people that can best represent the brand is not illegal and discrimination.

[CE]Governor Signs Shark Fin Ban.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/10/07/BABD1LEU1T.DTL&feed=rss.bayarea

The California Senate passed legislation that would ban the trade, sale and possession of shark fins, rejecting arguments that the conservation measure discriminates against Asians who consume shark’s fin soup. California is the fourth state in the U.S. to ban shark fin imports. Hawaii, Oregon and Washington already have done so.

I am glad that they ban the shark fin. As a top ocean predator, sharks play a vital role in the delicate balance of underwater ecosystems. They are slow to reach reproductive maturity and birth small litters; which, when coupled with overfishing, means that populations worldwide are in steady decline.

Humans are innately inhumane; they cut the fin and tail off the shark and dumped it back into the ocean. The shark was bleeding and sinking to the bottom of the sea because it lost the ability to swim. It ended up die with hungry and intolerable pain. Imagine doing the same thing on human, how can we survive without our legs and arms; how can we bear when our wound is bleeding and hurting. No one will wish himself/herself to be treated like this, then why is human doing this to sharks?

People who against the policy thought it is a discrimination towards Asians since shark fin soup are traditional Chinese food which usually served in important events. They are too sensitive. People would ban shark finning because it is sad and atrocious, not because of the race. On the other hand, it is ridiculous to keep such a cruel tradition. It’s not one of the traditions that we suppose to be proud of.

[RE]Nathan:"I have my racket!"

I can't stop laughing when I read Nathan's response post. He wrote:
Some people are scared of the darkness but I am not. I am not scared that people will rob me because I have tennis rackets to protect me.
I read this during lab class time. Then I  rush to Nathan's computer and mock him in front of Priscilla, Katherine and Stephy. And it turned out that all of us start laughing at Nathan. Yea that's what our friendship looks like.

I can totally understand that Nathan, a  guy whose mind is totally stuck with tennis, would say this. I may agree with him earlier in the school year, but not after the thing happened on two of my friends several days ago. It was late in the night; my friends were still walking outside for some reasons. Suddenly, two guys stopped them and pulled out a gun. They pointed the gun at my friends. My friends could do nothing but gave the robbers their wallets and cell phones. It was a right decision. Money is not an inherent part of the human being. Our life is more valuable than money. It would be silly to end up dead in a robbery.

It sounds funny how Nathan thinks his tennis racket is the greatest weapon in the world. When facing a gun, Nathan’s racket would just like a toy played by a three years old kid. If he choose to fight back, he may get injure, or die. I wish he would never do such a silly thing (or do it only when the robbers have a knife or something else besides a gun).

[Free] I need a break.

It’s the seventh week of school. My tiredness almost takes over all of my other feelings. I lost all the motivation of go to school and do my homework.

During government class, my soul flies away when Mr.Ramirze and other classmates are sharing about interesting news happened recently.  The words they say go through my ears and then left right away, I only remember some meaningless pieces.  Sometimes I would even lay on my desk and sleep. It doesn’t mean that Mr.Ramirze does not know how to teach, it is just because I am not very interested in government and it is the first class in the morning (although Mr.Ramirez has a monotone voice that can not wake me up). I spent most of my time on keep myself from falling into asleep. The reason I did not fall in asleep in my other classes is because teacher gave me works to do. That keeps me awake.

After school, I do not want to do my homework at all. The first thing I do when I back to my house is sleep. Dinner and Facebook comes next, but it will never be homework. At 12 o’clock I feel sleepy again. (I feel like it is because I did not get enough sleep from last life, so I feel sleepy every minute this life.) Okay, but I still need to work on my homework. The process is slow and full of yawning. It’s already 2 o’clock when I finally get to go to bed. (Sometimes I would choose sleep rather than finish up my homework, just like I did yesterday.) It’s like a cycle that gets worse everyday. My Tiredness just keeps gaining day by day.  I feel that I really need a break now.
